The Quilt!

Posted on

The QUILT was one of life’s most beautiful surprises! Apparently Creative Regions, the company of which I had been a founding member, sent out a message to colleagues when I was first diagnosed and invited them to send a patch for quilting. What incredible forethought! How could I have missed out on a single whisper of this amazing enterprise? But I did. That made it all the more awesome when the finished product was drawn out of its black plastic carry-all during a lunch at Thai Tulips restaurant yesterday. I was so moved I could hardly speak – each carefully placed piece brought with it the energy of a friend, a colleague; all of them busy people in the fullness of their working lives and yet they found time to do this marvellous thing! Turning the quilt over I could read on its pink-patterned back heartfelt greetings from locals and visitors to the recent State Conference – Artspoken who had taken the time to write a message of affection or concern. I have been around the sector for a long time. I have worked hard and loved it. This was an unexpected reward! I have never had a proper patchwork quilt- this is my first and very special for so many reasons. Karen, who sewed the pieces into their final form shared the lunch with us and she has offered to lead me along the way to more fabrication. There are a few patches left over that are begging to become a cushion cover!

  3. Hi Judy, I loved the idea of the quilt being made for you. It is such a wonderful gift on so many levels. It gives warmth and comfort. It is an object of beauty and of artistry, but it’s also such a powerful symbol of life. I can’t help but think of a patchwork quilt as representing all the pieces of our lives: disparate, distant, disconnected, yet somehow sharing similar features, all connecting to create one colourful, beautiful display. Sometimes there’s a square that we particularly love, another that somehow jars, but woven together they’re perfect. Just like your quilt.
